More Sanding...

The interior is in pieces, all of the wood has been sanded, except for the forward bulkhead. Tomorrow that last section will be completed and the fine hand sanding will prepare the surface for the stain and the varnish.

The cabin is already looking brighter with the old brown stain and varnish removed.

On Friday after the cushions (which are all stored in the vee-berth) are taken to be reupholstered the door for the cabin can come off together with the entry door to sand flat off the boat. A couple more hours sanding & prep and the fun can begin!

Another view of the forward bench.

Dinette and hanging locker doors, and drawers. The chopping board is made of maple and had seen very little use. When Uniflite built the board, they made it double sided with a handle on each end to last several lifetimes. It has all been sanded smooth and the few knife marks that were there have been sanded out. It is as good as new - both sides.

Interior Brightwork

The sanding has started. The old varnish is blowing off the mahogany interior. The grain exposed is beautiful. The varnish had aged and turned black, obscuring the natural mahogany colour.

Once all of the wood is nuded, a decision will be made to stain it slightly darker or leave it natural with just the varnish to add a golden glow. Originally it was stained a mid-brown with "Harvest Gold" formica on the galley side doors and drawers, which has been painted a few times over the years, including a lime green colour.

Tip Top - Top Drawer

The topsides are in amazing condition. There are no non-skid areas, no wear, no cracks, no chips, the entire deck is smooth gelcoat. Molded to perfection. There is one scuff on the hatch, not through the glass so it is only cosmetic.

All of the fittings are solid bronze, chrome plated and the rail is stainless steel.

The one spot forward of the anchor is a fresh bird shit. Well feed seagulls here on GI.

The anchor roller is going to be replaced with one found onboard.

First Stop - Granville Island

A GOOD TRADE

Sudbury Saturday Night (SS Night) arrived at Granville Island on Wednesday 21 September for a sea trial with Dr Doug from Blue Ocean Yacht Services (BOYS). After the run Doug estimated her a solid six and with minimal work she would be a ten.

Getting the nod she was lifted for an inspection of her running gear, which was found to be fine. Some quick negotiations dockside and the deal was done.

She was a bit tired, sun burnt and stained along the waterline, overall she needed a day at the spa. Being an early all glass boat she has a thick layer of quality gelcoat, unlike modern production boats today, unless you buy one of the top of the line Tiaras or such.

Oxidation remover was first used to clean the fiberglass, Interlux Heavy Duty Stain Remover was then applied liberally all over her hull and topsides. A quick bubble bath and on with the cleaner wax combo. Finally a coat of paste wax and for the blue stripe some colour restorer was buffed in and topped with the paste wax.

The shine returned and she is bright and clean as a whistle.

A dust storm blew in the yard, so the waxing was put on hold for the day. The above picture is taken before the blue stripe is done or the paste wax applied.
